The Beautiful Bride - Week 2, Day 4

Canned Conversation or Powerful Prayer?

IF…“ Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” Mark 1:35 (NIV)

IF… we should “not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

THEN… I will follow Jesus’ example and start each day in a quiet, private place to pray to my Father in heaven.  I will approach his throne with confidence to praise him and to pray about all things so that I may find grace and peace to help me in my time of need (Hebrews 4:16). I will intercede for others and give thanks in all circumstances.

As the Bride of Christ and the Daughter of the King, we have the ear of our Creator God! Prayer is simply the way that we talk to God. It is our connection to Him. As women, we love to communicate.  It has been said that we have many more words to use in one day than most men, so in general, we like to hear ourselves talk.  While our earthly grooms and fathers may not appreciate this fact, our heavenly Father can’t wait for us to come and talk to him.  Unfortunately, we often converse with others when we should be conversing with God.  We often seek advice from others instead of seeking His counsel.

Before reading the following quotes, please write out your definition of prayer.

Ponder the following quotes about prayer:

  • The greatest tragedy of life is not unanswered prayer, but unoffered prayer.   F.B. Meyer
  • Prayer does not equip us for greater works; prayer is the greater work. Oswald Chambers
  • The Function of prayer is not to influence God, but rather to change the nature of the one who prays.  Kierkegaard
  • Prayer requires more of the heart than of the tongue.  Adam Clarke
  • It is better to have a heart without words than words without a heart.  John Bunyan
  • Men may spurn our appeals, reject our message, oppose our arguments, despise our persons, but they are helpless against our prayers.  Sidlow Baxter
  • Don’t pray when you feel like it. Have an appointment with the Lord and keep it. A man is powerful on his knees.  Corrie ten Boom
  • The men who have done the most for God in this world have been early on their knees. He who fritters away the early morning, its opportunity and freshness, in other pursuits than seeking God will make poor headway seeking Him the rest of the day. If God is not first in our thoughts and efforts in the morning, He will be in the last place the remainder of the day.  E.M. Bounds
  • Satan trembles when he sees the weakest Christian on his knees.  William Cowper
  • He who has learned to pray has learned the greatest secret of a holy and happy life.  William Law
  • The one concern of the devil is to keep Christians from praying.  He fears nothing from prayerless studies, prayerless work and prayerless religion. He laughs at our toil, mocks at our wisdom, but he trembles when we pray.  Samuel Chadwick
  • I would rather teach one man to pray than ten men to preach. Charles Spurgeon
  • We have to pray with our eyes on God, not on the difficulties. Oswald Chambers
