The Beautiful Bride - Week 3, Day 4

Gifts of the Spirit

IF… “he has given each one of us a special gift through the generosity of Christ.  He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.” Ephesians 4:7, 16(NLT)

THEN… I will ask God what my gifts are and how I can best use them to build up the body of Christ to promote unity, love, and maturity in Christ. I will not compare myself to others and believe Satan’s lie that others are more gifted than I am.  I will recognize that I am indispensable to the body of Christ. I will love my brothers and sisters in Christ sacrificially, demonstrating devotion, patience, and compassion towards them.

Listed below are four passages that discuss different spiritual gifts. You will find that each one has the goal of building the Kingdom of God through unity in the Bride of Christ (the Church), so it should be obvious that we are called to be a part of a local church where we can use our gifts and enjoy fellowship with other believers. When there is unity among God’s people and we work together, the most impact is made for God’s Kingdom.

It is not unusual to be unaware of your gifts.  In fact, most of us struggle to recognize them because they are so much a part of who we are that we don’t see them in ourselves.  For this reason, let me suggest that you do the following things to discover your giftedness.

  1. Read through the four passages listed in the chart below.
  2. Pray for the Holy Spirit to help you notice the things that you are good at.
  3. Write down the things that your closest friends and family members rely on you to do. What are the things that others come to you for advice about or help with?

Think about the things that you love to spend your time doing. Is there anyway that those things could help you serve the church and show the love of God to those around you? Is there any way to use your passions to advance God’s Kingdom?

It might take you a while to understand how to use your spiritual gifts. It took me years! Throughout high school, I received awards for public speaking, but I did not think that was unusual. My major in college was theater, but I never became an actress. Because that major was “silly”, I went into restaurant management. I grew up teaching kids’ church because I was good at telling Bible stories. I am horrible at administration and need deadlines to get anything done; so I thought I was a failure and assumed that I was just disorganized and lazy.  Finally, after years of trying to understand spiritual gifts, I realized I was created to be creative! I am gifted at sharing God’s Word through stories and illustrations. I finally understood that I don’t have to be good at everything. It is okay to be good at the things I love and expect someone else to serve in the areas that I am weak or don’t enjoy.

As you rest in the love of your heavenly Father, as you find your identity in Christ, and as you discover and use the gifts you have received from the Holy Spirit, prepare to feel more alive than you ever have before!
