The Beautiful Bride - Week 4, Day 4

Love, Honor, and Obey

IF… Jesus said, “Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.” John 14:21 (NIV)

THEN… I will prove my love for Jesus by obeying his commands, and in order to do that, I must know his Word and all that he asks of me.  In doing so, I will by loved by my Father and my Groom, and Jesus will make himself known to me.

When you fall in love with someone, you learn to love the things that they love! I grew up in a family of girls. I was the oldest of four, and my dad was not really into cars. I mean he appreciated them; like most men, he would notice a nice car and comment. But that was about the extent of my father’s love for cars and, therefore, my knowledge of cars.

However, my complacent attitude about the chariot that afforded me my transportation was altered on the first date with my would-be husband. He, unlike my father, lives and breathes cars – specifically muscle cars. Aside from our family, it is the one thing that he can devote hours of his time and attention to. He loves to read books about them, search the Internet for them, and find them hiding under piles of junk in “small town anywhere.” He loves to tinker with his car, a 1967 GTO, for hours on end! There is little in this world that makes him smile more.  He LOVES muscle cars!  When we first started dating, he would spot a car, point at it and say, “What kind of a car is that?”  My response was usually something like, “a red car” or “an old one.”  He was not as amused as I was by my clever replies, and he took it upon himself to teach me about these “beautiful” machines.  I must have been a quick study because soon I was able to pick out the make and model of most cars. But then the questions changed to, “What year?”  Again I studied and passed the challenge, but the next query was “What is under the hood?”  I never quite mastered the size of the engines. However, I have learned to spot and appreciate a beautiful car that I know will excite him. And through the years, I have attended more car shows than you can imagine.  Why would I do all of this? BECAUSE I LOVE THE MAN!

When we love someone, we learn to love and value what that person finds important. Jesus said the same is true when we love Him. If we love Him, we will change our behaviors to please him. This will not always be something that we want to do, but IF we love our groom, THEN we must do it!

On the day of my wedding to my husband, I promised to LOVE, HONOR and OBEY him.  I chose to do this out of my deep love for him and because I understood his deep love for me. Through the years there have been times that I have had to remind myself that my husband, Mike, promised to love me more than anything or anyone else in the world.  There have been days that it did not feel that. On those days, I must remember, LOVE is not a feeling. It is an action. It is a choice. Although my choices to love honor and obey him do strongly influence the way that he treats me, our love, because it is human, will never be perfect.

On the other hand, the way that our groom Jesus loves us will always be perfect. His boundaries and commands are given for our benefit. He knows what will make us happy, and He guides us on the right path.  Our life as the Bride will be difficult if we forget or choose not to love, honor and obey Him.  Will you choose to love, honor, and obey God today so that he can prove his love for you and reveal more of Himself to you?
