The Beautiful Bride - Week 3, Day 1

My Teacher, My Friend

IF “… this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.” Romans 5:5(NLT)

THEN… I will know that God loves me so much that He has given me the gift of his Holy Spirit. I will confidently put my trust in his goodness and love, and I will live by the power of his Spirit as he helps me, comforts me, teaches me, and intercedes for me.

Last week we wrapped up the week looking at how God fills the two most important roles of a man in a woman’s life: father and husband. As a woman, I am so grateful that He knows and understands my needs. Can you imagine being one of the women who was a friend of Jesus while he was ministering on earth? Sometimes I daydream about what it would be like if He were here today so that I could sit at His feet like Mary and Martha did. Interestingly, before Jesus’ crucifixion, He told those who were close to Him, But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you..” John 16:7 (NLT)  His disciples seemed confused by this. How could anyone replace Jesus? Of course, the Advocate that Jesus was referring to is the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit!

Why would Jesus say that it was BEST for us that the Holy Spirit comes in his place? Before this time, the Spirit of God had never dwelled permanently inside of a person! This was a big change, a new promise.  Jesus, by His death on the cross, was bridging the gap that had separated God from man since the sin of Adam; by creating that bridge, God, in the form of the Holy Spirit, would now be closer to mankind than ever before.  He would literally dwell inside of us growing life where death once had reigned!

Did you notice what Jesus called the Holy Spirit? In the New Living Translation He is called the advocate, but other translations of the same verse use these words: comforter, helper, intercessor, counselor and friend. Take a moment to let this idea sink into your mind and heart. Consider the function of the Holy Spirit in a believer’s life.

  • Advocate: someone who supports and defends you.
  • Comforter: someone who holds you when you hurt and helps you through hard times.
  • Intercessor: someone who goes before another to plead or pray on your behalf.
  • Counselor: someone who teaches by giving wise advice and holding you accountable.
  • Friend: someone who loves you and cares about you enough to do life with you!

So, we can view the Holy Trinity this way: God our Father, Jesus our Groom, and the Holy Spirit our Teacher/Friend! There is nothing else that we need! God knows your thoughts, emotions, and ways. He understands your past, He is with you in the present, and He knows your future! He is your strength, your protector, your knight, your love, your hope, your friend, your teacher, your shield, your comfort, your peace, your joy, your EVERYTHING! Will you trust Him today?
