The Beautiful Bride - Week 4, Day 5

Sweet Fruit!

IF… “ the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed. Hebrews 4:1-2 (NIV)

IF… Jesus said, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 7:21(NIV)

THEN… I will understand that faith and obedience go hand in hand and that disobedience is a sign of unbelief.  As a follower of Christ, I will make every effort to obey God’s will and to bear fruit for His kingdom.

As a child, I learned a song for everything. One of the songs that I learned has the following lyrics:

O-B-E-D-I-E-N-C-E Lyrics

VERSE 1

Obedience is the very best way,

To show that you believe.

Doing exactly what the Lord commands,

Doing it happily.

Action is the key - do it immediately,

Joy you will receive.

Obedience is the very best way

to show that you believe.

CHORUS

O-B-E-D-I-E-N-C-E

Obedience is the very best way

to show that you believe.

VERSE 2

We want to live pure we want to live clean. We want to do our best.

Sweetly submitting to authority,

Leaving to God the rest.

Walking in the light, keep our attitudes right, On the narrow way.

For if you believe the Word you receive, You always will obey!

CHORUS

O-B-E-D-I-E-N-C-E

Obedience is the very best way

to show that you believe.

Despite all the laws, traditions and rituals in the Old Testament, obedience was considered the purest and truest form of worship. This is because obedience comes out of a pure heart that trusts our Sovereign Lord! In fact, knowing what we should do and not doing it is a form of rebellion, the kind of rebellion that kept the Israelites out of the Promised Land. Until we learn to trust and obey God, we cannot live effective and productive lives for his kingdom.

It is much easier for me to understand God’s perspective on this idea since becoming a parent. There are many times when I tell my children that they must do something or put into place a boundary forbidding them to do something. As a parent, my goal is to make their lives happier, safer, and more meaningful by the rules that I put in place. When they break my rules or refuse to do what I ask, often, they put themselves in danger or cause turmoil in the family, and they must suffer the consequences of the promised punishment. However, when a child submits to my authority because they trust me, my natural response is to heap blessings on them. I have beautiful conversations with them, and we connect in ways that cannot take place with a rebellious heart in the mix. They also enjoy special freedoms and privileges because they can be trusted.  I love every child in my home equally, but I bond in a special way to the child with an obedient heart.

How about you? Do you obey the boundaries that God has given you without question, or are there areas in your life that you refuse to give him authority over? Although submission is difficult, the rewards are greater and the blessings sweeter than anything you have ever experienced.  Will you allow God to accomplish his will through your surrendered life?
